Delete root mail

Ok I have read these forums and checked out the threads that pertain to this question and they don’t appear to help so far. I log onto my server su to root and run the mail command.
It says that I have 228 messages from root@bla.bla.com . Now I cant download the mail because I don’t have a

So I set up a .forward to send the email to another account and that is working fine but I still have the 228 in there now that I would like to delete. I have tried to run the 'd # - # ' and it just does this:

& d 1-10
&

And skips to the next line. I just want to be able to delete all 228 of them. I have tried all the commands on that I found and they don’t seem to work. When I do the mail command I get the list of like 30 and then the "&" symbol and if I type the delete commands nothing happens or I get a inapropriate number error.

Tahnks in advance guys!

P.s - i searched google as well, maybe i just stink at the internet!

I'm not sure why that is happening - it works ok on my redhat box, I just tested it to be sure. You could also just remove the mailbox manually:
rm -f /var/spool/mail/root
