Custom kernel compile on RH9 and FC1?

hi there,

few years ago i've orfered 2 servers:
1. RH9 + cPanel/WHM Linux mnr 2.4.20-30.9 #1 Wed Feb 4 20:44:26 EST 2004 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux
2. FC1 + cPanel/WHM Linux mnr2 2.4.22-1.2199.nptl #1 Wed Aug 4 12:25:07 EDT 2004 i686 athlon 386 GNU/Linux

now i want to upgrade to kernel 2.6.15
but i'm not familiar with RedHat and Fedora

can i just compile from the source like in other distros?
and is this kernel compatible with these version of RH and FC?

thanks in advance,
Ross

the new kernel is not instantly compatible with those systems. they shipped without support for 2.6 kernels and so would require additional packages like module-init-tools for 2.6 kernels specifically. it's not impossible by any means, but it's not nearly as straightforward as upgrading to a more recent 2.4 kernel etc... you might have luck at the fedora legacy site, which may contain suitable kernel rpms for both systems.

hi used module-init-tools 3.2.2

after execute "make modules_install"
i've got this errors:
Code:
Warning: not translating path[updates]=/lib/modules/updates
Warning: not translating path[unsupported]=/lib/modules/unsupported
and after execute "make modules_install"

Code:
  INSTALL arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/longhaul.ko
cp: cannot stat `arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/longhaul.ko': No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/longhaul.ko] Error 1
make: *** [_modinst_] Error 2
anu ideas?

thanks,
Ross
