Can't get back to Gnome from virtual consoles

I just installed RedHat 9.0, choosing all the default options, and it boots into the Gnome desktop just fine.

When I switch to a virtual console with, say Ctl+Alt+F1, I can't get back to Gnome. The documentation says than xwindows and Gnome should be at virtual console 7, and entering Alt+F7 should return to Gnome, but this does not work. I also tried Ctl+Alt+F7, and Alt+F7and every other combination with F keys from 1 to 8. Ctl+Alt+Fx switches between virtual consoles fine, but Gnome does not reappear till I reboot.

What am I doing wrong?

Sorry, mine is at Ctl-Alt-F7 keys...I wasn't using Debian at the time of the first post.

I found the problem.

My keyboard was connected to the Linux system through a KVM box, and although the CTL+ALT+F1 would take me to a command-line virtual console, CTL+ALT+F7 would NOT take me back to Gnome.

The KVM (a Belkin SOHO) seems to not correctly pass CTL+ALT+F7 for the purpose of restarting Gnome, but it does pass any CTL+ALT+Fx for the purpose of switching between virtual consoles. Strange!

It all works fine when the keyboard is directly connected to the computer.
