Binary logging on MariaDB?

Hi all, I'm trying to set up replication between two databases in Mariadb (RHEL7). The first step is to enable binary logging, but I can't for the life of me get it to work. I've edited my.cnf, and under the [mysqld] section I've added:

log-bin=mysql.bin

I've then run sudo systemctl start mariadb and sudo systemctl stop mariadb

When I log into the database (mysql -u root -p), however, I type SHOW BINARY LOGS; and I get

Error 1381 (HY000): you are not using binary logging

It's driving me nuts. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks!

Ugh, looks like we were using an older version of MariaDB. Once we upgraded it we were able to enable binary logging.
