Question Badblocks check in Linux

During badblocks check (badblocks -s -v -c 1024 -b 4096 /dev/hda3) for hda3, mounted partition, the system hangs. (Used with Transmeta TM5800, via chipset). What could be the issue?
Can I use badblocks check on mounted partition?? (Using Redhat 7.2)

you can use it to check but not to repair while mounted.

I tried multiple times, of course in 2 hard drives, the behavior is same, system hangs, I don't think it will really have any bad blocks, even if it has bad blocks it shouldn't crash !!!

on the command line type init 1. this will take you into single user mode. unmount /dev/hda3 and then run your command.

Thank you Frustin,
Does it really matters wheather in init 1 or init 3?
Yes in init 1, the bad block check passes.
I use via chipset, I think I need to use a patch with Redhat 7.2 to program the ATA speed. I am trying that too.
