When you boot try useing the "vesa" choice for screen ,this worked for me whenever xorg.conf didn't get it right and I got a black screen.
tytower is correct. I had a little different problem but I changed it to vesa and it works a lot better. I was able to get into puppy and change it over to vesa. Yes, the developer should of left the choice to choose vesa or xorg.

Ok guys, first off, I want to say a big THANKS for the help!

tytower, no problem for jumping in here. I understand. We all just want to figure out how to get our stuff running..

Ok, now for my Tecra 8000 problem. First of all, for reference (in case anybody runs into this in the future..) What I stumbled on to was when you get a blank screen when xorg starts up, just press CTRL ALT F2 and you will get a login prompt. Also, I had a little trouble finding out root's password. For reference, there isn't one, so just press ENTER.

OK now here is what I have done. Per SML's instructions (thanks!!) I ran xorgconfig, and saved it. Based on the xorg.conf file that ubuntu is using (posted previously..) I entered (at least what I thought was...) the appropriate info. I then saved the updated xorg.conf file. I then ran startx and I still have a blank screen.

Below is the xorg.conf file that was generated by xorgconfig for puppy ...

So now compare the working file from ubuntu to the file from puppy that doesn't work. What are the differences. Obviously ignore the stuff commented out with #!

Hi All,

I have a similar problem with a Toshiba laptop, currently running Xubuntu 6.10/Xorg/Gnome -- it fails to complete Puppy's video wizard. I have resorted to booting with 'nox', so I get the command line. If I then copy my Xubuntu xorg.conf into /etc/X11/ and run 'Xorg', everything looks fine.

When I type 'xwin' to run Puppy's startup scripts, I get stuck and nothing works. I believe I've narrowed it down to a place in the script where it looks in xorg.conf for a #Puppy... (HardwareConfig, or something like that) comment. Within that comment is encoded information about the driver and display. This is used to detect 'new' hardware and re-run the wizard. So to fake the script, I believe I have to generate that line from the laptop's hardware in "my" xorg.conf file, but I haven't had time to examine the method by which that line is created.

I'd really like for the wizard to work on my laptop, but I realize that may be too complex, so I'd be happy for a suggestion on how to fool Puppy's scripts into allowing me to use my xorg.conf file. Any ideas?

I'll keep working on it when I have more free time, and if I find a solution, will post back here.

I've got a similar problem as well (got here by doing a search for "Puppy Linux out of range"). When booting Puppy both the xorg and xvesa options fail. Xorg give an "x failed to start" message and xvesa flickers like crazy and the monitor gives and "out of range" error.

Normally I'd just try different distros till one worked but I've got my heart set on Puppy 4.1.1 this time. The computer is a older single core P4 with RD-RAM and a small hard drive so I want to load a small, lite distro that will run fast.

Looks like xorgconfig is the key.

Gonna try this:

1)Boot with other distros till one works.

2)Copy xorgconfig from that distro.

3)Boot Puppy 4.1.1 no-X/

4)Copy the previously saved xorgconfig from the working distro.

5) Manually start X

Think that will work?

Got a better idea?
