Fido

Has anyone run puppy as user Fido? I want to use puppy as a non-root user and would like to know if Fido works?

I powered up Puppy in VirtualBox. It is not friendly to using a regular user rather than root.

I was able to create a user and a home directory for it. I could su to the new user. I exited the GUI to a terminal, but was unable to logout from the root account with either "exit" or "logout" so as to log back in as the new user.

Still had fun testing it though.

Thanks for the info guys, I tried running as fido but puppy just didn't work correctly so I've decided to just continue as root.

Yes Puppy is just not designed to run as multiuser and use a normal account - really only works as root as originally designed. There used to be a mutiuser 4 version but alas like most Puppy development that stalled.

I think it may be one of the compromises necessary to make it so small and portable.

Hmmmm Yes but other distros like Tails and knoppix and LinuxBBQ can be portable too and not compromise on that.

Using user spot on here for firefox

Code:
root# ls
Desktop Downloads README.txt spot.png

Back when I used Puppy Dingo 4 on my IBM A22m. I ran it as Fido OK.
I would pick and choose what applications I widhed to run as Spot or Fido and run them out of their (Fido or Spot) folder. Ymmv from mine though. Like learning spanish or latin. Some can. Some cannot.

rokytnji, would you be so kind as to provide more information or a link explaining how to set that up?

Link

Edit. Back when I was was running Puppy 4 Dingo. Fido was offered during shutdown
at the save session. If you opt for fido, at next bootup you will be automatically logged in as fido. I am not sure if the newer Puppys offer this option on some of the newer puplets or not.
