After puppy shuts down improperly or I need to switch my laptop off manually, because of an improper shutdown, I encounter errors and can't boot normally.
Eventually I get to the command #(root?) prompt. Is there any text I need to enter to get my operating system back?

Have you tried typing in xwin at the command prompt?
It's Puppy 4.1.2. The problem is that puppy can sometimes hang, like when a process is in conflict with another or is just not responding and the user has no option but to manually switch off their pc.

Before holding down that power button, make sure it actually froze.
If there is a program accessing the drive in any way, you take the chance of a bad sector being made on the hard drive.
An example would be doing a dd command on a drive and with no progress indicator and processor intensive use, one might think the PC had locked up.
Yeah, this type of error has happened in the past a few times. I'm running it on an old Toshiba Portege 4000 and sometimes my old laptops act in a strange way.
If I ask to restart I will have to wait a while and then manually switch off once the screen has been blank for a minute or so. But then everything's OK...
