Xlib / Window Manager programming questions

Hi there!

I'm relatively new to xlib programming and I need some advice/direction if anyone can help me.

I essentially want to run a OpenGL based layer alongside of the currently enabled desktop environments/window managers. (think rendering a VR Desktop alongside the current Desktop Environments)

I'm looking to get access to all the window pixmaps running on the system in order to render them in this separate program. Is this possible?

If you can point me to some resources(maybe a Class/function/member name aswell? ) that might help that would be fantastic. I just need to know where to start looking.

Thanks for any and all help,
-ozz
