Which db are you using? My first instict would, like you, assume it's not getting anything from the database.
Can you check the code you use to connect and then run that independtly of the code to make sure that the login/password you use to access the db works from the location you'd expect it to work. If you try that and get errors, please post them and I'm sure it'll get figured out
