vi split mode with one window Bash?

Can vi or vim have a bash window open along with a file at the same time?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

If you mean by a bash window a working terminal in which you can execute commands, create/delete files and dirs etc: No, you cannot.

You can however jump to a shell without exiting vi: Type :sh in command mode. To leave that shell and go back to the file you are working on in vi press ctrl-d or type exit. This only works if vi(m) isn't started in restricted mode (which it isn't most of the time).

Hope this helps.

Does the emacs command take arguments?

I can't give an example now but a lot of times when I try to open a system file with emacs I get an error message instead of stuff that I have no idea what it means, system bus and such.

Does the emacs command take arguments or options? Can emacs be used in a slimmed down way? I prefer emacs but vi is usually more usable. Vi is included in Everything!

in this case you would be better off to post the errormessage.

And please tell us what you want to achieve. vi and emacs are very different tools, as you know vi is primarily for editing files whereas about Emacs people say it should be probably possible to edit files

But in general editing systemfiles should not be a problem with any editor.
