Using dialog --gauge to monitor git clone/pull etc

Hi.

My first time here so be gentle!

I'm trying to write a deployment script in bash which is essentially going to be a basic frontend to git.

I'm using dialog to build my menu etc and I'd really like to use --gauge to display the progress of a git pull or git clone.

Anyone have any idea how I could achieve this?

Thanks in advance!

Ben

The trouble with using gauge or progressbar widgets is that you need some way to estimate how much time is needed to complete a task -and doing so uses up extra resources. The Xdialog sources may contain an example for at least one of those -the one for formatting floppies IIRC. The same syntax may work for dialog as for Xdialog.

Now using --tailbox

Hi.

I've instead redirected output from git to a file which if I tail -f looks perfect!
If I use dialog --tailbox to display the contents it doesn't behave like tail -f running from the shell.
Instead I get a very slow refresh unlike the realtime refresh of using tail -f in the shell. Along with this it writes newlines to the dialog --tailbox.

Anyone know a way to increase the redraw/refresh rate of --tailbox? Or is there another solution?

Ben
