The Gimp is an obvious choice for opening and editing image files (analogous to - but far superior to - mspaint).
I'd say Gimp is more like Photoshop than MS Paint. There are some "biggish" differencies with Gimp and Photoshop (like the ability to load 16-bit/channel images, which isn't possible with Gimp today if I'm right, at least without some 3rd-party plugin -- ufraw is, but only for RAW camera files), but mostly Gimp resembles Photoshop; MS Paint is something else..

Jpico <- can open & edit & save but I would like to have nice KDE gui.
I read that so that a text-based editor (or hex?) is needed rather than an image editing program or a text processor (like Writer)..

Similarly, "Kate" and "Kwrite" are analogous to Notepad or Wordpad.
I think you're looking for something like MS-Word or MS-Powerpoint, right?
Have you tried Open Office?
Hi, yes I know, the reason why I want to use text editor is that I'm testing how an exploit works.
Like adding php script to the end of an image file and renaming it image.php.jpg <snip> .. <snip> That is the reason why I'm looking for text editor, in windows Notepad++ is capable of opening images (without corrupting) and adding "text" to them.
I can do that with Jpico but I would like to have KDE gui just to be able to view it more easily.

Not really. You're going to run into problems with this eventually.
