Starting developing on Linux

I am starting PHP development on Linux workstation, my background is from .NET so all this Apache,MySQL and PHP is quite new for me.
How do you usually develop on Linux? Are you running webserver on the workstation or are you connected to a server. How do you connect to server via terminal windows on X or how?
How about software for PHP? Is there a good IDE for PHP and MySQL server?
Do you know any good article on the web about developing in Linux?

i connect to my server.
makes it easier to work with.
i suppose you could always connect to localhost.

XAMPP is a great virtual server if you need it.. find it on sourceforge.

I run a small PHP/MySQL website as a "side project" to my actual job. I use "Quanta Plus" as my IDE, and I run an Apache/MySQL instance on my development machine that mirrors an Apache/MySQL setup on my production machine (which is hosted by an external company). I use the MySQL GUIs themselves (mysql-administrator and mysql-query-browser) to do my DB administration on both my development and production DBs. The PHP website itself has some really good (IMHO) documentation as far as PHP itself is concerned, but in general Web Development on Linux is no different than Web Development in any other environment, except I usually don't get lockups every 2-3 hours (like I do at work when working on VisualStudio.NET )

Hope this helps

As well as the home site: http://www.php.net/manual/en/ , you can also download all the code examples from O'Reilly PHP Cookbook from http://examples.oreilly.com/phpckbk/
