Post Scripts tp Check Network Connections

I am not a Linux network guru. But I am sure that someone in the forum can help. I am using a satellite network that is experiencing some troubles. I think that a script that could ping each terminal would be able to provide details of timing and pack loss. Need a script that would allow entering the IP address, the period of testing (hours) and record the data (time date stamp and details) to a file. can anyone point me in the right direction.

I believe the Ping command string is the basis of the script that would output 24 seperate text files with the results for the specified test period.

Thanks

Don't know if it helps, but I use this PERL code to see whether a machine is up in our network:

$h1="123.123.123.123" # IP address
system("ping -c 1 $h1 >ping.txt");
open(P,"ping.txt") or die;$online=0;
while (<P>) {
if (/1 received/) {$online=1}
}
close P;

Maybe you can modify it to your need, which I did not fully understand...

Clarification to Ping Script Requirement

I am trying to detemine the status of a satellite modem which provides Internet connection to a remote location. I believe that I can run a script the would ping the device over a 24 hour period so I can determine what packet loss and delay is being experienced. The ideal situation would be to collect the data, then write the data to a file so someone can review it. Further this data could then be sent to the service provider who claims nothing is ever wrong.

I am not interested if the unit is up per se, but need to know how it is performing when it is up.

I need to do this for 24 locations

Hope this clears things up.
