rpm-5.x.y vs rpm-4.x.y

In my ever going process of building things from sources I need to build 'rpm'.

Interestingly enough, though rpm-4.x.y looks like an older branch, the newest release comes from that branch and not from rpm-5.x.y.

The two branches are hosted at different URLs: http://rpm5.org and http://rpm.org .

Any insights on practical differences between the two ?

Thanks in advance.

RPM 5 is a different rpm, forked from rpm years ago. AFAIK.

My oldish SUSE-11.1 still uses rpm-4.x.y.

All well known rpm distros are using rpm-4.x.x.

RPM 5 : 'Alt Linux' only, I think.

Rpm 5 is not compatible with a normal rpm-4.x.x.

Thanks for the clarification. I am building 'rpm' in order to be able to use RPMs distributed by well known distros, so I'll stick with rpm-4-x.y.z .

Usually there is no need to build rpm :
"All" distros come with rpm packages in the repo.
Also all those not using rpm : Debian, Slackware, etc.
