python sms based app

I am trying to create a python app to read the phonebook from a mobile phone via AT commands. Here is my setup, I have a GSM modem connected to a laptop running ubuntu 12.10 and I want to write an application that will receive an SMS from any mobile phone and send commands to the phone to retrieve the phonebook and store it in a database on the laptop. So my question is, how can I do this?

You want to send commands to "any mobile phone" to retrieve its contact list? When the phone is in the field and not connected via a USB cable? You can't.

And I wouldn't want to live in a world where you can.

Seriously, why do you think you want to do this?
