Programming SOHO DSL router

Hello,

I am wondering if anyone here knows how to re-program a dsl router like dlink or linksys?
I want the capabilities of a small unit with multiple interface cards but with my own configurations.
I want to install a small distro of debian on a router.
Anyone know how I could do this?

Thanks for reading,
Adamantium.

Im going to say no, because soho routers are developed with
their proprietary firmware in mind. Their insides are undocumented
and not engineered to operate an OS like linux. Although...if you did
know how to construct a binary firmware program that the router could
upload, you - in theory - could control it that way...yet you arent going to
be able to run an OS. A router isnt a computer in the sense a Pc, Mac or even
a dreamcast is.

Jinksys, you might be suprised by the market share that Linux has in this embedded market. I found a link for some information on hacking a particular Linksys router.

Now adding a distro like Debian I think not, you need to look at one of the distros for embedded apps.

I didnt say running a kernel was impossible, I said that installing and running an OS was nearly impossible.
