programming in PHP on linux?

What do i need to start writing some php code?
i've seen some tutorials where they install xampp, but i see it installs php,mysql... and other stuff, my slackware already has mysql,
so i don't know if installing xampp would cause some conflicts.

what do i need to install considering that i already have mysql.??
thanks in advanced.

This may help: it's a step-by-step guide to installing all the components of a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl/Python) server on Slackware.

If you're running slackware it's basically all there already
anyway. Just install phpMyAdmin for your entertainment,
and you're away laughing.
