PHP: GD script with a .PNG extension - Possible/How to?

What I would like to do is have a PHP script that uses GD actually have the .PNG extension like other images. Unfortunately, just changing .php to .png didn't work for me. :P Does anyone know if this is possible and, if so, how to do it? Thanks ahead of time.
