Question need advice on tools

this is the first time in years i am on linux (easier for wife till now,i made her switch). my question is;
i use to program alot for windoze. vb and some perl. i am looking to begin in c++.
i dont have alot of extra cash for tools. is there any place or software you can recommend.
i need to make GUI, compile, class files, the whole nine. i have alot of the basic code, in a different language, but i think i can wade through it with google and books. i have spent the past week searching and decided i would ask those that would know than just random downloading hoping i find what i need.
thanks in advance.

If your looking to program in c++ and want to program GUI, try to lauch designer from the command-line.

Assuming, qt is properlly installed on your system and you have the dev packages too. (chance are that all is already installed, just run 'designer' from a x terminal)
