Making a program only use idle time.

Hi there. I'm writing a program which does some heavy number crunching, but I wish for it to only use the CPU's idle time when available (so it won't slow down any other processes). What's a POSIX (or portable) way to do this?

Thanks. I've never heard of the nice value before. That'll work nicely. Cheers.
