It's essentially the same as "Mastermind", start w/ the Wikipedia article:

BTW, it would have been helpful (& therefore more polite) to have given a link to a description of the game -- I never heard of "Cows and Bulls" before, but I think our family had "Mastermind" from its introduction in the US.

This Wikipedia article tells the game. It is not the same as Mastermind. Also, 4digits is an open source version of the game under Linux, which I write .
