linux mini-c shell handling background processes


I am trying to build a c mini-shell for my assignment.And my shell works fine in accepting a simmple user input commands like cd,ls .....so now i have to work on the background process but i have no idea how to start it.Is there any one who cld give me a direction,reading material,or any thing helpfull???
