So, I had no problems with editing my php files in Linux. Strangely expected. Anyway, FreeBSD crashed on my Dell after it had been unplugged and out of commission for a while, so I reinstalled Windows. But not only does the FTP not lend to being able to edit the files from the host, but most of the files are still encoded for Linux. Opening them in notepad the paragraphs are all screwed up so it's hard to make heads or tails of the files without formatting it so it looks okay again. Is there something I can download for Windows that works like the editor in the KDE desktop? Or some way to change Notepad or Word? I'd also like to be able to edit the files through FTP again, though it's not much effort to just edit things on my comp and move them back.
When you "file, save" from write.exe, it will automatically convert the file to DOS format.
when you ftp back and forth, "set bin" for binary files, or "set asc" for text files (will add cr/lf for linux to dos, will remove cr/lf for dos to linux).
Don't tell me you're actually trying to write code in Notepad! Do you have some kind of masochistic streak or something?
Try jEdit. It has plenty of features, there are lots of plugins available, it's cross-platform, and it's free software. For PHP work, I like the XML and PHP Parser plugins. I believe there is an FTP plugin, but I haven't tried it. And yes, I can convert between Windows and UNIX newlines.
I have often wondered if I was intellectually masochistic, yes. But Notepad was the only thing I had to write code in before, and I remember how elated I was when I got to play with Linux for the first time. After using the Vi Editor, I figured that Notepad was the closest thing Windows had to it.
The Wordpad idea was great. I don't know why but when I was a lot longer I tried it out, didn't like it, and hadn't used it since. jEdit has been great! I haven't tried the FTP plugin yet, but so far it's made everything a lot easier. Thanks!
