Java: Threading, GUIs, etc.

Hi all. I'm working on a client-server application that requires GUI interfaces for both Windows and Linux, so I figured I would write it in Java. But I've never done GUI work in Java before, so I was wondering if anyone has hints on how to make this work? In fact, unfortunately, I've never written a multithreaded app in java, but I suppose I'll need to to handle client/server IO over a TCP connection, since java has (I understand) no real support for non-blocking IO (not in a select() way, anyway). Does anyone know of good tutorials on making this all work together, or have any hints for me?

Not sure about what you mean by no real support for non-blocking I/O, but Java has non blocking I/Os since 1.4:

It is possible to pass a timeout parameter to the java.nio.channels.Selector select method, which is perhaps what you are looking for.
