Is there any difference between ipc on SMP systems and NUMA systems?

As far as I know, on SMP systems, when a process, say A, send a message to process B, OS first put the message in a memory area known by both processes, then B take it from the area.

Is the ipc mechanism on NUMA systems the same? Does the ipc has any optimal support for NUMA?
