is it possible to read from the user's filesystem

I plan to develop a website, which checks a specific folder in the users file system, and compares it with files on the server, and checks if anyone is newer, is the file on the server is newer, that file is listed for download.

Now is it possible to read client and server filesystems by the same script in php5?

When you talk about user file system are you referring to their files on the server or on the client machine?

If the files are on the same physical machine then yes it can be done but you will need to ensure that you address the problem with appropriate permission to the file system.

A server-side PHP5 script cannot read the client's filesystem.
