I gotta be honest, and forthright.

You're never going to learn this just "thinking" about it, or continually reading up on it.

I had to learn things, because I was required to deliver for my job.

You get one done, you're relieved, because it wasn't simplistic.

It doesn't stop, there are more, even to this day, such as learning Bluetooth stacks, and AWS protocols.

I wish you the best of luck and success with your endeavors.

But I truly feel what you need to do is stop research and start by compiling some source.

All these questions you're asking can be resolved by a lot of immersion in the code.

Yes, but some kind of idea is needed for the project.

OK

I'm done.

You have been given several ideas.

From what I can see here, a project is the last thing you should undertake.

Sorry but all you've done is continuously ask for ideas and apparently done zilch.

I hope you discover this project you find to be suitable.

I tend to agree with rtmistler - you need to follow your own ideas, questions and the projects that emerge, rather than the suggestions of other to write something.

Explore the frontier until you know the territory, then pick the place where you want to build the cabin, house or mansion that suits your own purposes.

Ask yourself what your own interests were in beginning network programming, and follow where those lead!

Good luck!

Yes, the advice has been rather good. (the rift between "start doing!" and not yet knowing what to do just vexed me a little.)

You have my apologies for rubbing the wrong way. As you can likely tell, my style is to move forward, experiment, and attempt things. I get the impression this is different from your style. Best with your explorations.

I think maybe SoftSprocket's suggestion of trying to write your own protocol is probably what you are looking for.
You can of course steal ideas from the existing protocols mentioned above, which are well documented.

Note that whether you completely succeed doesn't actually matter - you'll still learn a lot.

HTH

Alternatively, try to imagine (or research) interview qns on networks and learn the answers...
