i386 compiling

How can you verify that a file binary was compiled for i386 rather than i686. I am trying to compile some stuff as a i386 while working on a i686 but am getting errors that seem to be pointing to being compiled incorrectly. How can I look to see if I did compiled t for the correct architecture. I thought objdump was the answer but it seems to be telling me that everything is a i386.

if you're compiling a package, then i think there's probably an option in configure to set the processor type.

if you're just compiling a small program, then you can use the gcc option '-b i386' to compile for a 386. this should also work for packages, but you'd need to find mess around with the make and configure scripts.
