Graphical programming and Linux

Ok, people i want to open special thread for person who are interested with using GUI in their application (Qt, mainly), and still want to use old Linux function,
in example i wanted to create application controlled from Qwigdets, but using functions like gettimeofday,etc., special handlers and others made a trouble with qt.
So, if you want, write your ideas, maybe examples, how to use both, Qt and the function from linux kernel. Thanks for any inscriptions.

I have no idea where you have problems. From what I know, QT has problems to handle many threads in one program, but this can be understandable. So what is your main problem?

Could you give an example of such a "special handler" that causes trouble in a Qt application?
