GLX code won't run anymore?

Hi all,
I went to compile some "oldish" glx code. The code compiles great but when I go to run it I get a crash. With

X Error of failed request: BadMatch (in .....

running ddd causes my whole system to lock up when I call the glx function XOpenDisplay. After a few attempts I thought I'd download a demo from the net, I choose nehe opengl tutorial 2, I compiled and ran but even on a net tutorial I get the same error

./lesson02
XF86VidModeExtension-Version 2.2
Got Doublebuffered Visual!
glX-Version 1.2
Resolution 640x480
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 44
Current serial number in output stream: 44
Locking assertion failure. Backtrace:
#0 /usr/lib/libxcb-xlib.so.0 [0xb5c8a787]
#1 /usr/lib/libxcb-xlib.so.0(xcb_xlib_lock+0x2e) [0xb5c8a92e]
#2 /usr/lib/libX11.so.6 [0xb7416de9]
#3 /usr/lib/libX11.so.6(XESetCloseDisplay+0x44) [0xb73f8e74]
#4 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 [0xb770f90b]

I'm really unsure what's going on here, has x changed ? Or is something corrupted on my system, I'm running Debian with nvidia drivers (haven't updated them and they were working)
The Nvidia settings shows
Screen number 0
DisplayName Gamebox:0.0
Dimensions 1440x900

Thanks

Ok I've traced it to my headers,
if I run openGL headers

#include <GL/glx.h>
#include <GL/gl.h>
#include <GL/glu.h>

then I get the errors when calling GLX stuff, if I use the basic headers eg

#include <X11/Xlib.h>
#include <X11/Xutil.h>
#include <X11/Xresource.h>

It runs, however my open gl stuff was working in the past, can anyone advise ?
