FAT .open/.close and table update

I noticed in file.c for FAT in the file_operations structure, there are no .open or .release fields. What gets called when there should be a file open or file release in FAT with Linux?

And also, could someone please point me to the location in the source where the table is updated (File allocation table) for a write?
