Question fake translucence.....how it works?

I know this sort of vague .....but how does fake translucense work ....
I dont expect anyone to accually explain it to me but if anyone knows of some good sites on the net to read about it I would really appreciate it....I googled but didnt really find what I was looking for......
Im trying to implement it into a program without using optional backgrounds......for instance making the konsole transparent but making the transparency default so when a person uses my program they cant change the background.
any suggestions welcome.

I think the basic idea is to copy the area of the backgound (root screen?) under your app, and then use that picture as the background. The effect would work best if you update the screen capture on any move or resive event

Read the source of how many other apps do it to be sure
