Error: lost connection to MySQL server during query

I get this message whenever I try to connect to MySQL server at home from work. I am going though a router at home but it makes the initial connection but then I get the error after I enter the password. TCP/IP is working because I can connect through a telnet session that stays connected.

are you able to connect from localhost?

Also, check /etc/mysql/my.cnf and make sure that skip-networking is commented out.

Yes, I can connect from localhost but not from any other host either inside or outside my router. I cannot check my cnf file because I have since blown away that server and reinstalled Mandrake. The original install was Red Hat. Now I can't even seem to get MySQL running. I need to work on it for awhile and then might post any questions later.
