cvs commit error

cvs add cvsnotes.txt is fine. then i do cvs commit cvsnotes.txt and get cvs commit: failed to create lock directory for /cvs/cvsnotes.txt /cvs/cvsnotes.txt/#.cvs.lock) no such file or directory.

on a related note, what is the difference between add and import?

'import' adds all files from an existing directory (and subdirs) at once to CVS. Use this when you have a project already and want to start using CVS with it. Then move (or delete) the directory out of the way, or go to another directory and do a checkout to have a CVS working copy you can work on using CVS. You can then start using it.

IIRC you could also 'add' all the files one-by-one instead of doing an 'import', and then do the checkout. 'import' is merely a convenience thing to start using CVS on an existing project.
