Coding a sniffer program for windows and linux

Hi,

What sort of libraries can i use for coding of sniffer program for windows and linux?
The sniffer that i want to code is for capturing the list of connected clients to AP wirelessly.

I do know that the wireless NIC needs to be in 'monitor' mode in both windows and linux.

If I remember correctly there are a lot of wireless drivers that don't support monitor mode in Windows. Just food for thought.

I know about kismet and have used it.

What kind/type of packets to be captured and the libraries for use to determine if whether the client is connected to the AP?

Yeah, that's a good point, critical in fact, because only a few drivers actually support promiscuous mode. For how to use it, I'm sure you can google it ... I can't really post it because it technically is cracking ... Either way the commands are listed if you find a howto, and then you can investigate the source.
