"Thinking in C++" is an excellent guide. It's available as a book in print and also on the web at

Be warned: it is LONG

There are a bunch of books online. You might also want to check out CodeWarriorU, which used to be quite good. You do not need CodeWarrior for the lessons.

let me just second the 'Thinking in C++''s pretty good
and also the codewarriorU lessons...they present the material in an easy to understand manner, and have a forum where you can post questions relating to the lessons ..or just questions in general.. the only problem i have noticed with that is, that some of the lesson tests are wrong , but they're supposed to be fixing them in the future.. other than that , codewarriorU is still a good starting place i think.
