C++ Opening a webpage

Through C++ is there a way to check the contents of a webpage without opening it to the user, I would like for the program to go to something like go to "www.dictonary.com/reference/happy", without opening dictonary.com and then return a positive or negative result, is this the most effeicent way? Would it be possible?

Have a look at libcurl ( http://curl.haxx.se/libcurl/ ) or libwww ( http://www.w3.org/Library/ ) which encapsulate all the major functionality which you need to interface with the web (i.e. mainly sockets programming).
