Analyzing System Crashses

Hello All,
I am trying to develop a utility for the Linux platform which will be helpful during system crashes. It is going to perform 2 tasks:-

Firstly, it will keep a regular backup of the important files which can be recovered after a system crash.

Secondly, it will keep a database of important system information which will be helpful in investigating why that system crash occurred. Moreover it might even display a warning if such a situation occurs when the system behaves abnormally.

If you have some experience in system administration can you suggest which information will be helpful in determining the cause of system crash so that they can be tracked down?

The contents of /var/log/syslog are going to be your best friend. Along with that, 'dmesg' and pretty much most of the files in /var/log

Many a times it happens that whether there was a crash or not, some system files get corrupted. so for personal use i created a utility that took backup of the necessary system files.

i have uploaded the utility. you can download it at
http://forge.novell.com/modules/xfmo...ct/?systeminfo

what's more? you can even add your own directories to take backup of (your personal files, programs etc.)
