Access linux device driver from a java application

i am trying to write a java application. It have to collect some data from a device driver. i heard jni can do it , but let me know how???
or if there is any other way ??

you can open files in /proc and /dev but i think you would then need to give the java interpreter access to these devices which i dont like the sound of. also isnt java supposed to be platform indpendant, wouldnt doing this make it horribly platform dependant?

My application is not supposed to be platform nutral, It will run in linux machine only. Pls tell me specifically how to write an application that access device driver
