32bit libraries on 64bit pc

I have the SDL stretch libary but it resfues to compile. It says it's in the wrong format. Also when making the source it complains it doesn't have the assembly op codes. Hence am asumming it's because my g++ is 64bit. Can I run g++ in 32bit mode or do I have to install 32bit g++
