The most stupid question ever?

Decided to do apt-get update and upgrade.......a whole raft of stuff was installed. Out of curiosity did the same with Synaptic to see if anything had been missed. Anyhow, another raft of stuff was installed. I don't understand! What am I missing here? Thanks for any pointers.

well most likely the "raft" of stuff you saw installed was actually the repository info being downloaded. and if you told synaptic to use smart-upgrade thats the difference between apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade
