I recently upgraded from Mepis 6.0 to 6.5. The sound worked fine in 6.0 and with the live 6.5 CD it also worked fine. When I upgrade the system however (I have now done it twice) the sound won't go. I have disabled the onboard sound in the bios (which worked well in 6.0) and it recognizes my sound card but alas no sound at all. The kmix settings are fine. I have run alsaconf with no success. Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.
I have a similar problem, except different specs and I'm using 64-bit Mepis. I just have no sound whatsoever, and I cannot find the solution, no matter how hard I research online.
I'm no guru, sound or otherwise, but over at mepisloversdotorg they have a guy named mos who I suspect dreams about sound configurations at night. You might also consider posting the output from
<lspci>
I have solved the problem but not very elegantly - so probably not a solution at all. I tried updating everything to do with alsa and scoured other sites but to no avail. I then upgraded to Mepis 6.9.0 beta and the same thing happened i.e. with the live CD the sound worked find but after upgrading leaving my home partition intact the sound would not work. Next I reinstalled Mepis 6.0 and you guessed it - the sound worked on the live CD but this time did not when I reinstalled the operating system,(again leaving my home partition alone). So now I was back where I started but now no sound when originally it worked fine. Not to be outdone I then copied the contents of my home directory and nuked the home partition (along with the root and swap) when I did the reinstall, and voila!! this time the sound worked fine. I wont go into the gory details of getting my email transferred across and there is still the matter of the address book which seems to be either in the ether or somewhere on the saved data on the DVD.
I did save a copy of the output of lspci and lsmod for the version that would not work and can do this now for the current system where the sound does work. I am not sure if this is helpful to anyone but it was suggested above by handydan and I am happy to pass this on if someone wants to look at it (someone cleverer than me). I get the feeling that a small tweak in one of the configuration files would have solved the problem...but which one?
