PCI USB card wreaks havoc
Hi Everyone,
This question may be more suited in the Hardware forum, but since it is Mepis related, I thought I would post it here.
My wife´s Mepis box only has two usb 1.0 ports (old PIII 1.0GHz IBM board). So, I thought I would add a PCI USB 2.0 card for her. Since Mepis has the best hardware recognition of any distro I have seen, I figured there was a good chance that it would work. And I was right, it did work. Plugged the camera in and it immediately posted a camera icon on the desktop. However, then the residuals were discovered. The eth0 card no longer worked and dmesg displayed tons of errors. I had also upgraded the graphics card at the same time to an nVidia FX5200. I did not know which card was the culprit causing the errors, but in the end it turned out to be the PCI USB card because removing it restored everything.
I am assuming the USB card created an unresolvable IRQ conflict, but I was wondering if anyone has ever gotten one of these things to work under Mepis. I could just add a hub to the existing port, but that would only give her 1.0 speed.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Bob

Trying different slots helps quite often.

Thanks, bluesman, that a good suggestion. I havn't tried that yet, but will give it a try. That does switch IRQ's, and it may have some effect. I don't want to change slot for the eth card, so I'll try another one.
Thanks for the reply

I have an IOGEAR two port USB card that's been working for a long time. At least since 3.3 and just purchased a five port card to take it's place. I don't remember having any issues with the install. And no issues since. Don't expect any with the change in cards either.
Running 3.3, 3.3.1-1, 3.4-3, and Beta4 at the moment. And have a four port HUB on the expansion card.
EDIT: Changing slots is first and also checking the BIOS wouldn't hurt.
