apt-get question

At the command line, after doing apt-get update, is there a command to get a list of packages are are 'upgradable' ..... similar to what you see in Synaptic? How does Synaptic do it since it is a front end for apt-get?????

i'm not sure, but maybe:
Quote:
-u

--show-upgraded

Show upgraded packages; Print out a list of all packages that
are to be upgraded. Configuration Item: APT::Get::Show-
Upgraded.

If you type

man apt-get

or

man apt-cache

you'll get a list of more available options than you can shake a stick at. You might be interested in "--show-upgraded" and "--simulate" but I'm not really fluent because I let Synaptic worry about the details.

..or maybe:

apt-get -s upgrade (shows scope of the upgrade)

or

apt-get -s install (shows scope of the install)
