I'm new to Mandrake and would like to play MP3 on my rig.
Fedora has some xmms-mp3 package in order to do that, but after adding the required repository URLs to my Mandrake package management, I couldn't find any available package with that name.
P.S. I know that for some legal problem it's not included into the official Fedora or Mandrake distro.
tia for any solution or suggestion.
By the way, Mandrake is the easiest distro to install, all my hardware was nicely detected and I was amazed to see the 3D hardware acceleration driver for my ATI 9600 automagically installed.
Actually it is installed in Mandrake with standard install. Amarok and Kaffeine are both installed and capable of playing mp3 with a standard Mandrake 10.1 install. In Mandrake 10.1 if you want xmms, just select xmms through the control center and I expect you will find mp3 codecs were installed previously during your initial Mandrake installation.
Thanks for the information, I downloaded one MP3 file and Kaffeine was able to play it right out of the box.
The more I use Mandrake, the more I like its user friendliness.
The only problem I have now is with my game controller, but that will be for another thread.
xmms does work in 10.1. I'm now using it in conjuction with another program. The rpm install sets up xmms wrapper same as Mandrake 10.0 did. To get it working, simply open up "menudrake" and find xmms in the list, highlight xmms and you will see in the command box "wrapper xmms". Simply delete the word "wrapper" so it only says "xmms", save and exit. It will then work as you expect. Although, I do like Kaffeine and Amorok. Also been playing with Rythymbox, an iTunes clone, lately.
