Question X server problems with Mandrake 9.2 and 10


I posted earlier today about the problems I'm having getting the KDE gui to load in Mandrake 10. I cleared this installation off the system and tried 9.2 instead. When I tried to use the startx command this time, I received the following error message:

first issue is that SubSection is a bad thing, those Sections are called Section (ie without the Sub) ... which would be the first thing i'd change

Here is my current (generic) XF86Config file (note i've got a mouse, touchpad, and trackpoint [or whatever those laptop knobs are called]) though i don't think they are reflected in this ... at least i can't see them.

also, this is of Slackware 9.1, but that doesn't matter.

I don't know what is wrong, but try running 'xf86config' as root. That will help you create a fresh XF86Config like chakkerz' posting.

It is a bit odd that it complains about /etc/X11/XF86Config, as far as I know Mandrake uses /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 as configuration file... You do not by any chance run XFree 3.something ? I dont even have the file /etc/X11/XF86Config

Wierd!

What graphics card do you use?

Just from reading some other posts, I was also under the impression that XF86Config-4 was the file that Mandrake would use. I ran xf86config as root and did create a new version of the file, but this is what actually resulted in the errror I currently get as everytime I tried to use startx without running the config program, I also got an error. I believe the video card is a Diamond Viper 770 32mb.

Diamond Viper is based on the tnt2 chipset isn't it...?? I think I recall something about that. If it is you probably have the same problems I experienced myself.

Tnt2 cards rely on the nv (short for NVidia) driver from X (tnt2 is really a nvidia chipset). Since Mandrakesoft wants to be nice they will install the nvidia (not nv) driver supplied by NVidia them selves. The problem is that the nvidia driver doesn't work (on many systems atleast).

Look in your XF86Config for the "Device" section. See if you have an entry that says

Driver "nvidia"

and change nvidia to nv, save, and launch X. If it doesn't say Driver "nvidia" please post the "Device" section from the config file.

I just tried using the XF86Config file that was suggested, and now the error occurs on line 166 which is Section "InputDevice". This is the section for the keyboard. The error given is that "InputDevice" is not a recognized section name. This is clearly not the case since someone else said this is exactly what they have in their file, and ideas?

Yes, you're right about the Diamond Viper. I checked the XF86Config and found the Device section you were talking about, but the driver was already set to nv and not nvidia.

well ... copy and paste the file listing above, replace vesa with nv and see what happens

(Backup your current files for the time being)

Also, if you get error messages, try posting them (though yes it is a pain if you have to copy em down)

That's what I previously tried. I didn't actually copy over the file listed above, but I went in and modified so that it was the same as the one listed, but with my listing for the video card. This still results in me ending up at a blank screen.

Also, I was attempting to get Fedora Core 1 to work on the same system, and I finally did, but only after I modified the horizontal/vertical synch rates and also the screen resolutions because the monitor isn't properly detected. I made these same modifications to the XF86Config file for Mandrake, but I still end up at a blank screen when I try this. Any idea what's going on here?

Just wanted to say I did get Mandrake 10 to work. The problem was that my monitor wasn't being detected correctly and the horizontal and vertical synch rate values that it was automatically assigning didn't work with what I actually have. Thanks for the help.
