For 2 months all was well. Then one day I started up my PC and got to the point where the screen goes blue and the log in screen is about to be displayed, then instead of displaying the log in screen X server exits to the command line.

First error was that the Radeon 9800 graphics card could not be found so I rebooted did a force file system chk and got errors, manually ran a file system fix and finally errors were repaired.

Rebooted and the same thing happened but this time the error was:

[EE] eror [DRI] DRI screenInit failed - disableing DRI

x server version is 6.8.99.90


Now nothing I do makes any differance, I really was enjoying my Linux experience and had got a fully funtional system running and have moved from windows. Can anyone help ?

boot to failsafe from lilo

change to init 4

type
startx
and see if it crashes then
as it will rule out an issue at runlevel 5


if you were like me i installed offical ati drivers from in X and is was disaterous also at init 1
Drivers only like init 4.
so reninstall latest ATI drivers from ATI site.

All was working ok , I was even playing UT 2004 using open GL, I don't know if fixing the file system corrupted a config file or something.

try running

fglrxconfig

from
init 4
