Question when i try to configure mandrake 10.0 the window crashes when i put in password

Hi

Thanks for reading this thread.

My problem occurs when I try to configure Mandrake Linux 10.0 via the menu.
If I click on the Start/System/Configuration/Configure your computer a window pops up which says that the action I requested requires root privileges please enter the password.
When I type in the password the window freezes and the configuration window does not open.(this problem occurs with every menu item that requires root access)

I think the problem is with the window that requests the password because if I open a terminal as root and enter drakconf.real the configuration window opens.

If I enter drakconf.real as a normal user I get this message - kdecore (KIconLoader): WARNING: Icon directory /usr/share/icons/slick/ group not valid. - this may mean something to somebody.

This may be part of the problem - A few weeks ago I was playing around with Linux from Scratch and edited something now I have to type export PATH=$PATH:/usr/sbin into a terminal or I get this sort of error - bash: drakconf.real: command not found.

So my questions are these -

1. Is the problem because I screwed with the paths?

2. How do I fix the path ? It's a little annoying and I'm sure it is easily fixed.

3. Can anybody help the problem with my freezing password window?

Please note I know enough to seriously break things but not enough to fix things so be gentle with me.

Thanks.
Ethereal

Eh, have you tried logging in as root?

If the display manager is not permitting this do the following...

Switch to the console by pressing [CTRL][ALT][F1]

Log in as root and type

service dm stop

Now start up Xwindows without going in via the display manager... using

startx

You may get some warning about running Xwindows as root, ignore it.

Run the KDE and enable root logins.

Make any changes you want while you are in there.

Then also go into the MCC and make whatever changes you want.

BTW: Consider switching to kdm instead of mdkkdm as the former is controlled by the KDE control center and has a few nicer enhancements.

As root /sbin (where "service" is located) should be in your command search path...

Something is amiss.

Try

/sbin/service dm stop
